대우조선해양(대표 남상태, www.dsme.co.kr)은 10일 이 회사에서 가진 노르웨이 BW GAS사의 선박 명명식에 오스트리아 대통령 영부인 ‘마르기트 피셔 (Margit Fischer)’ 여사가 선박의 이름을 명명하고 축복을 비는 대모(代母)로 나서 화제다.
이 날 명명식에는 대우조선해양 남상태 사장, BW GAS사 헬무트 소멘(Helmut Sohme) 회장을 비롯 오스트리아와 노르웨이 대사 부부 등이 참석한 가운데 마르키트 피셔 여사가 자국의 이름을 따 ‘BW 오스트리아(BW Austria)’로 명명했다.
선박 명명식에는 대부분 선주 부인이나 사회 명사가 선박의 이름을 부여하는 스폰서(Sponsor)로 나서기는 하지만 국가 원수나 영부인이 직접 명명자로 나서는 일은 드문 일이다. 하지만 이번 명명식에 오스트리아 영부인이 참석하게 된 것은 세계 최대 규모의 LPG 선박을 성공적으로 건조한 것을 기념하고, 오스트리아 출신인 BW 가스사 소멘 회장의 특별한 초청이 있었기 때문인 것으로 알려졌다.
‘BW 오스트리아’호는 현존하는 세계 최대 규모인 8만4,000㎥급 VLGC(Very Large Gas Carrier)로, 길이 226m, 폭 36.6m, 높이 22.2m의 제원을 갖춘 초대형 LPG 운반선이다. 세계 최대 재액화 장치를 탑재하고 있으며, 17노트(시속 31km)의 속도로 운항할 수 있다.
BW GAS사 헬무트 소멘(Helmut Sohme) 회장은 "이번 선박을 비롯 많은 프로젝트를 성공적으로 수행해 준 대우조선해양에 감사의 마음을 전하다”며, “세계 최고 수준의 가스선 건조 기술력과 품질을 바탕으로 한 대우조선해양과의 향후 프로젝트들도 기대한다”고 말했다.
한편, 대우조선해양이 인도한 LPG선은 대표적인 고부가가치 선종인 LNG선을 능가하는 고난이도의 기술을 요한다. 조선업계에 ‘LPG선을 건조할 수 있다면 LNG선은 쉽게 건조한다’는 통설이 있을 정도다. 현재 대우조선해양을 비롯한 국내 1개 조선소와 일본 2개 조선소만이 건조할 수 있다.
